public outcry from Brisbane’s lord Mayor

15 Nov

Those in the offices where our voices need to be heard are finally taking notice!  Today, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk came out publicly attacking Brisbane’s bus services (particularly, and unsurprisingly, their pricing schemes), adding that Brisbane’s bus services have seen their “worst performance in over a decade”!

With the focus finally in the mainstream media, now is the time to show your support for public transport, and our opposition against the current poor pricing scheme, and average service and infrastructure.

public transport for all

2 Oct city-traffic-55846291

Public transport is a public service, and should be available and affordable to all

Brisbane has the highest public transport rates of any city in Australia by far and amazingly, is far more expensive than most cities in the world!

When the Queensland Government’s Transport body ‘Translink’ decided to purchase hundreds of green buses and other transport vehicles, and install their fancy new ticketing system (even their transport branding has become convoluted!) they decided to pass this cost on to the consumers.

At the present rates, some trips on public transport are more expensive than taking a car! – How is that responsible or fair, and how is that ‘green’?

We want to petition the state to bring down the costs of public transport to make it fair, and encourage people to use it!  At the present time, buses, trains and ferries are all too often empty, or near to it!  – There is nothing green about this!

Buying hoards of ‘green’ buses and other transport means and installing an expensive new ticketing system, then passing the expense on to consumers while no-one uses the services because of their prohibitive costs, is merely paying lip-service to those who are genuinely concerned about our environment and our public transport infrastructure.

We hope that by encouraging the possibility that buses, trains and ferries are always full and a feasible option, we will be taking cars off the road, and making our city, state and our country green and efficient, and making public transport fair.  – Making public transport, truly public!
